I'm Lew Dean and I am playing Horton in Suessical.
I am Liaison to HCSMT and I was a Bad Idea Bear in Avenue Q.

To start this post I should talk about why I auditioned for Horton. Honestly, I think I admired Horton and related to him more than the other
characters. He is suffering from many of the same issues that plagues our society: exploited kindness, bullying, and being shunned. Although he faces such
difficulties, Horton still manages to keep his head up and be kind to others. His
actions send a really great message to the audience. Even though you
may feel alone in the universe, if you just listen, there will be someone out there who believes in you. Being able to play Horton, and experiencing his kindness,
is making me a genuinely better person. It has been a transformative experience,
and the show hasn't even opened yet!

Before auditioning for Suessical, I actually didn't know much about the show besides being based off the books of Dr. Seuss. What
truly connected me to the show was its characters, especially Horton, and the music. The music expresses the intense amount of emotion projected throughout the show.

As far as the cast is concerned, no other group could be better.
There are a lot of new faces in HCSMT this year. It is my co-performers that inspire me. They work as hard (or harder) than me, and they inspire me to perform my best every time that I go to rehearsal. It is interesting having
a cast primarily filled with people younger than me, in contrast to my
experience in Avenue Q last year. This year has brought a lot of talent that
has truly allowed the story to shine. There is heartbreak, laughs, and joy
throughout Suessical, and they have captured it all perfectly.

everyone!

I'm Matt Dyjack and I'll be playing the Grinch in the
upcoming production of Seussical. I'm a senior at Hood College and
this will be my first time acting in a theatrical production.

Being a member of HCSMT has been an awesome experience! Everyone brings tons of energy to rehearsal and the mood has been extremely
positive. Each cast member supports each other and helps each member reach their potential. Bianca and Stacey have helped me
with my singing (I found out that I'm a bass which I didn't know before),
and Josh and a few others have been helping everyone learn the dance
routines and get the timing down.

Seussical
has introduced me to a style of work and collaboration that I hadn't
experienced before. The show is very much about how everyone comes
together collectively, but still requires mastering your individual parts.

To help get in touch with
Seussical, I read almost every Dr.
Seuss book in the library and read "How the Grinch Stole Christmas"
four times.

Even though I don't have as much musical or acting
experience as most of the cast, each member has been
extremely supportive of me and helped me out with whatever I need. It
really
has been an amazing experience and I'm glad to be able to be a part of
it before I graduate!

I'm excited to watch the show continue to grow and bring Dr. Seuss' characters come to life!

Each has a large personality, an abundance of energy, and love for performance. The children will appear in three different show numbers as the Who children of Whoville; stuck between the old ideals of their parents and the new ones on which JoJo, the Mayor's daughter, thrives.
Each week, we teach and review the dances they need to know for the show. "Anarchy, linguistic or otherwise, flourishes alongside another, equally pronounced strain in Seuss' work," writes A. O. Scott of The New York Times Magazine, "not of preachiness, exactly, but of unabashed moral seriousness."

Dr. Seuss was a follower of contemporary nonsense authors, including Lewis Carroll and P.L. Travers. Yet, his whimsical vocabulary and imaginary characters produced themes that mirrored his liberal political views during the mid 20th century.

Choreographing "Biggest Blame Fool" this evening, the cast of Seussical examined the philosophical tension between liberty and anarchy within society, a central theme of Horton Hears a Who.

To quote Scott further:

"The genius of Dr. Seuss's early books lies in how closely attuned they are to this tension -- how they delight in the liberties of the imagination without quite condoning anarchy. The author seems simply to have intuited an essential aspect of the developing psyche: as much as children long to wriggle free of adult control, they depend on grown-up guidance. Who else, after all, will read books to them? Literally, children are led on these voyages by a parent's voice, and often embark on them from the comfort of a parent's lap. The success of the trip depends on the strength of the tether that anchors them to the prosaic security of the everyday world."

Children of the modern era face this tension in more ways than even Dr. Seuss could imagine. The growth of technology has created an unprecedented opportunity for individuals to express their liberties, most commonly on social media sites. Anarchy ensues when cyber-bullying triumphs.

HCSMT's production of Seussical will present Seuss' themes for a 21st century audience. "Biggest Blame Fool" will reflect on the delicate balance between liberty and anarchy through the use of dance, acting, costumes, and multi-media. What would Horton tweet? Would the Sour Kangaroo rant on her Facebook status?
Beginning with vocal selections and ending with dancing, I was truly astounded by the amount of talent found at Hood College. Students from a wide variety of classes, majors, and backgrounds auditioned, making my responsibilities extremely difficult.

After hearing everyone's songs, ranging from "Money, Money," "A Whole New World," and "Dentist!" I closed my eyes and imagined these individuals bringing Dr. Seuss' beloved characters to life on Brodbeck's stage. How animated would this individual act? Does the student truly understand the literary and historical backgrounds of the characters? Is the performer having fun and enjoying the company?

After spending an hour dancing, I immediately knew I was going to enjoy directing more than I expected. I was amazed at how well students took direction, how much laughter (painful) musical theatre smiles can create, and the visual difference between stressed, drilled dancing and light-hearted, giggly movements.

The company learned that there are no straight lines in Dr. Seuss books, so their movements on stage should never be direct, linear, or produced. We explored both horizontal and vertical leveling between performers, and imagined how our actions and expressions are experiences from the audience's perspective.

And, voila! After much thought, here is the official cast of Seussical!

Authors Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty took a "less is more" approach when eliminating some of Seussical's physical aspects prior to its first national tour. The famous duo, known for their broadway classic Ragtime and Disney favorite Anastasia, recognized the show was driven by the audience's imagination - connecting the show's scenery and theme.

Void of space and time, our set will follow this artistic choice. With a show that entangles over six Seuss stories, our stage must easily transform from the Jungle of Nool, to Whoville, to the Circus McGurkus... You can see how Ahrens and Flaherty struggled with Seussical on Broadway.

HCSMT's creative team is constructing a set that maximizes the vertical and horizontal planes on the tiny, music-hall stage in Brodbeck. Two 12-foot long catwalks on opposite sides of the stage allow performers to be amongst the audience, eliminating the need for scenery during Seussical's narrative-driven numbers. With a single, compact spotlight on characters 12 feet from the stage's apron, the audience's imagination will create the scenery, aided by expressive performers.

Vertically, the set features a faux proscenium, masking the famous columns flanking Brodbeck's stage. Acting as the binding of a book, this set piece spring fourth the performance's plot.

Nearly 30 feet behind the proscenium will be an 8-foot black wall, featuring silhouettes of Dr. Seuss' famous drawings, including Truffula trees, staircases, and who-homes. Extending the length of the stage, these flats will be placed similarly to Avenue Q's dwellings.

Behind this wall is a giant scrim, or white screen, reflecting LED colored lights, intended to direct a scene's mood. Illuminating from holes and crevices, this light will effectively contrast the black silhouette flats directly between the scrim and the audience. Patterns and moving lights will produce a "northern lights" effect behind the performers.
Lastly, three circular flats, with diameters of 8, 6, and 4 feet (stacked) will create a giant wedding-cake style moving flat. With a variety of roles, including the Who's dust speck and Horton's nest, this flat will create three different vertical planes during the performance. Expect this piece to move throughout the performance and be equipped with patterned lights moving to the beat of the music!
Our set will allow the audience to imagine, create, and explore the world of Seuss through the lenses of their imagination. Lighting and special effects from Parlights, INC with flashy, expressive costumes on our performers will easily transform the music hall into a vortex of possibilities. Like a Dr. Seuss book, each audience member will have their own, unique visual reaction. It's truly a set built for the imagination.
HCSMT's first children's ensemble rehearsal, held this evening in Brodbeck Music Hall, was an outstanding success! Members of the ensemble learned the choreography to Hear on Who, their debut number in Seussical. After receiving a tour of Brodbeck Music Hall (including several WOWS! after seeing their fancy green-room) the group was center stage performing box steps, coordinated hand gestures, even a few Charlestons!

Children's Director Julianne Berg led an orientation meeting with the children's parents during rehearsal, explaining rehearsal procedures, ensemble pictures, costumes, and volunteer shifts. To take a quote from her welcome letter to the parents, "we hope your children will imagine their possibilities, create timeless memories, and explore their theatrical talents during our production of Seussical."

Tomorrow is a busy day for HCSMT - including a morning meeting with Parlights, our contracted theatrical lighting provider, and set construction around noon!
May 29, 2013 found HCSMT members transporting Avenue Q set pieces from Price Auditorium into a storage room in Alumnae Hall. Amidst 90 degree heat and a blazing sun, 2 X 4's and plywood was carefully tucked away for Seussical.

Fast forward to January...

This time, within swirling snow drifts and temperatures struggling to reach 25 degrees, Seussical director Travis Gilbert, children's director Julianne Berg, and tech team member Jaime Ramirez loaded handfuls upon handfuls of lumber onto a truck bound for Price Auditorium. Graciously assisted by SGA Student Life Chairperson Ray Rivera, the team collected the supplies for tomorrow's inaugural set construction day.

Check back tomorrow for a feature on Seussical's set and the volunteers who are building this unprecedented stage design.
Over a dozen Hood undergraduates kicked-off the rehearsal period for this year's Gender-Bender cabaret!

Dubbed the "HCSMT Ensemble," this year's group will perform the opening and closing numbers at the 2nd Annual Gender-Bender Cabaret. HCSMT expects over twenty students in the ensemble.

Gender-Bender Cabaret co-directors Stacey Axler and Lew Dean announced the group's opening number, Fergie's "A Little Party Never Killed Nobody," featured in Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby soundtrack.

Transforming the Gambrill Gymnasium into a 1920's speakeasy, the group learned over a minute of the Jazz Age song. Join us next week as we review this choreography and add more!
HCSMT began yesterday's In the Streets festival volunteering with event organizers from Celebrate Frederick. At 7:30 AM, executive and creative team members were along Market Street preparing for the crowd of thousands later to come.

Throughout the festival, HCSMT continued its tradition of having costumed characters at an informational booth. Treasurer Joe Denicola, Liaison Lew Dean, and member Amber George played Spiderman, Captain America, and a princess while informing parents about Seussical's children auditions.

Per HCSMT's 2013 - 2014 commitment to raising awareness about literacy, our booth featured bookmarks with important season dates and info!

Meanwhile, back at campus, flash mob director Garrett Cline put some last minute touches on this year's flash mob and commenced the march to Market Street at around 2:30.

At approximately 3:10, "Don't Stop Believin" started blasting from the third street stage and a crowd of students, clad in blazer gear, starting running from the crowd and dancing within the intersection.

Soon crowds of people lined the street to watch HCSMT's 2013 flash mob ensemble master the number.

After the crowds left, HCSMT members enjoyed a picnic in Baker Park, with food prepared by President Travis Gilbert's mom and aunt.

Several individuals need to be thanked. Without their support and guidance, HCSMT would not witness the success or challenge the leadership skills of its student members:

Cathy Gilbert & Deannie Schorr for preparing the delicious picnic food and providing essential behind-the-scenes help.

Garrett Cline, for shinning bright in the spotlight (as always) and for stepping up to the plate.

George Cassutto for filming the 2013 flash mob.

Julianne Berg, Ricardo Huerta, Lew Dean, Amber George, Elaheh Eghbal, Stacey Axler, and Joe Denicola for managing HCSMT's information booth.

David Gurzick for providing HCSMT the opportunity to give back to the Frederick Community and assisting in HCSMT's 2013 In the Streets participation.

And finally...

To all the 2013 flash mob performers. The group was full of wonderful and talented personalities, all whom had fun with the dance and left the crowds astounded. Great work!

Now, onward to the 2nd Annual Gender-Bender Cabaret! Stay tuned!
HCSMT's 2013 flash mob is right around the corner... are you ready?!

Flash mob director Garrett Cline, HCSMT President Travis Gilbert, and Hood College professor Dr. David Gurzick prepared for the event in Downtown Frederick this afternoon by scoping out performance locations and organizing logistics.

Afterwards, the group enjoyed a delicious lunch at Frederick's newest business, Juice Plate, which features fresh, local salads, sandwiches, and smoothies at affordable prices.

Juice Plate is a community-oriented and socially conscious business adventure - a great business model for Hood students and friends to support! Stop in and enjoy this great eatery!

Any perspective audience members should plan to locate themselves on Market Street between 3rd & 2nd Street. Expect the performance between 2:30 - 3:00 PM. You will immediately know when the flash mob begins - we promise!

...the exact time and location of the performance will be kept a secret!

Also, be sure to stop by HCSMT's booth beside the Celebrate Frederick booth at the intersection of 2nd and Market Street. Pick up a season bookmark, learn about our children's auditions, and snap a picture with one of our costumed characters!

Held at the historic Whittemore House in Dupont Circle, headquarters for the Democratic Women's Club, the conference focused on career-ready literacy within our education system. The group listened to the nation's educational leaders who articulated how employers and schools can work together to prepare students with the literacy skills needed for today's workforce.

The conference featured an address from Mrs. Alma Powell, chair of America's Promise Alliance, acclaimed children's author, and spouse of former U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell. Mrs. Powell spoke about the economic consequences of an illiterate citizenry, informing us that nearly 600,000 job openings exist in today's marketplace, however, there are no skilled workers to fill these openings.
Dr. Maureen McLaughlin, International Reading Association President and chair of the Reading Department at East Stoudsburg University of Pennsylvania, defined career ready literacy for the group following Mrs. Powell's address.

Rich Long, from the International Reading Association, moderated a panel discussion including Glenn Marshall of the National Association for Manufacturing Excellence, Dr. Ann Kennedy from Arlington Mill High School, Rich Carson from Rotary International, and Jaimie Mathews from the u.S. Chamber of Commerce.

Dr. Kennedy enlightened conference attendees that 98% of her Arlington, Virginia high school students work at least 30 hours per week during the academic year, yet, only 12% are at a career-ready fluency level. Continuing, the panel discussed how Rotary International and the business community have been adopting schools and partnering with students to provide technical and literacy training for high school students, preparing them for the workforce.
