The Mission of Dr. Seuss

"Your mountain is waiting/So... Get on your way!" writes Dr. Seuss at the conclusion of Oh, the Places You'll Go.

Recently, as I've been preparing for the introduction of our 2013 - 2014 season, I have been reflecting on the goals and mission of Hood College Student Musical Theatre. Pondering on the specific mountains our organization and its members face in the upcoming year.

As an actor, I appreciate the connections made between a performer and their character. HCSMT allows that connection to ripen with leadership opportunities that last a lifetime. Here, we produce, create, and perform our own show, with helpful advice from our knowledgeable advisers.

Now, I'm on the other side of the house, serving as a director and a president. As director, I need to facilitate the performer-character relationships that will allow our talent to blossom. As a president, I must facilitate leadership opportunities for our organization's members, so they may grow as campus and community leaders.

I'm proud to announce that HCSMT will be working with the Catherine Filene Shouse Career Center and Office of Service Learning to conduct a childhood literacy advocacy campaign during Seussical!

Our cast members, creative team, and executive board will be charged with promoting childhood literacy and sparking the imaginative spirit of the Frederick community. Through book readings, community service days, and academic discussions, we'll shed light on the benefits of reading at an early age.

President's Gold Award
I have made it HCSMT's mission to earn the President's Volunteer Service Gold Award for the 2013 - 2014 year.

Dr. Seuss created these imaginative worlds, timeless characters, and memorable rhymes in order to actively engage children's minds and introduce them into the world of reading. He understood that knowledge, fed through a curious imagination, was power.

By understanding Dr. Seuss' mission, our cast and creative team will learn, hands-on, the purposes of their characters, the mission of our show, and the legacy of Dr. Seuss. Characters facilitated by these experiences will produce a meaningful, quality production, always a HCSMT standard.

Check Seussically Inclined, regularly for volunteering updates!
