Meet the Drag Performers!

HCSMT is ecstatic to bring drag kings Avery Austin and Mr. Thomas with Miss Gay Western Maryland Miss D. Meaner to the Hood College stage at the 2nd Annual Gender-Bender Cabaret.

Meet our 2013 drag performers below and don't forget to attend the Drag 101 Talkback Session in Whitaker 220 following the cabaret! Attendees get a chance to meet with the drag performers, ask questions, and have  photo opportunities. Refreshments will be provided!

Avery Austin:

Avery Austin
Beginning drag in 2004 from Boston MA, Avery began as Avery Allston, hailing from the Allston community in Boston. Moving to Austin, TX, Avery transitioned from Avery Allston to Avery Austin before spending 8 years as a member and board of director of Austin's premiere drag king troupe, Kings 'N Things. Known for his dramatic musical theatre numbers in box ties and suspenders, Avery has been performing with DC Kings since 2011. Avery has cherished his 10 years of performing and is grateful for any opportunity to share his passion with an audience.

Miss D. Meaner
Miss D. Meaner:

Throughout the past 13 years, Miss D. Meaner has performed at venues nation-wide. With a personal record of 14th place at Miss Gay Amerca, competing on four occasions. Miss D. Meaner completes charity work for HIV/AIDS assistance programs in her spare time. Support our local queen this April as she competes for Miss Gay America Maryland at the Hippodrome Theatre as she hopes of representing Maryland at the 2015 Miss gay America pageant!

Mr. Thomas:
Mr. Thomas

Beginning in 2009, Mr. Thomas has performed with Drag King Rebellion in Ann Arbor, Michigan and DC Kings, the longest running drag king troupe in the world. When he's not lighting up the stage, you can find him cruising the DC streets on his motorcycle or enjoying a craft beer with his King brothers.

What should students expect from your performance?

Mr Thomas: "The students should expect to be dancing in their seats & singing along to my numbers!"

Miss D. Meaner: "You can expect a high energy performance that will pull you in and say wow!"

Avery Austin: "I'm known as the musical theatre king, so expect a dramatic performance."

Madonna or Britney Spears?

Mr. Thomas: "Although Madonna hails from my home state of Michigan, I grew up listening to  Britney with the windows rolled down and the speakers blaring..."

Miss D. Meaner: "Madonna... She is the queen of everything!"

Avery Austin: "That's hard! Definitely a life-long Madonna fan; but I think Britney may have out-done her when it comes to dance..."

If you were in the Crayola Box, which color would you be and why?

Mr. Thomas: "I'm most definitely cerulean. I have very vivid memories of first discovering that color in the crayon box--it was as if I pulled the Hope Diamond from the Earth. Because I couldn't remember the name, I would color little swatches of all the blues looking for the one that stole my heart"

Miss D. Meaner: "Red, I believe it stands out the most out of all the colors in the box."

Avery Austin: "I'm going with Burnt Orange. Orange is my favorite color in genera and Austin is crazy about their football team - their signature color is burnt orange."
