Gender-Bender Time!

2012 - 2013 HCSMT Executive Board at the 2012
Gender-Bender Cabaret
"It's not about what is is, it's about what it can become, " Dr. Seuss tells his audience within The Lorax.

While planning the 2012 - 2013 season, last year's HCSMT executive board agreed that the organization needed to create and brand an annual fall event, without overshadowing the spring musical.

As so, the Gender-Bender Cabaret was born.

Now, a staple of the Whitaker Wednesday series, the Gender-Bender Cabaret features professional drag performances and student dance routines.

Last year, as director and host, I was astounded how many hands were raised when I asked the audience, "how many of you have never been to a drag show?"

As President, I'm honored to introduce many Hood students to the world of drag - after all, the foundational component of college is to make new experiences.

This year, our cabaret features DC Brolo Drag King performers Avery Austin & Mr. Thomas. Our drag queen will be announced at a later date.

The HCSMT student ensemble will perform the opening & closing numbers, in opposite gendered attire, of course. The evening also features performances by the Hood College Soccer Team, The BrotherHood, and The Movement.

Charged with creating this event, I never imagined what it would become. I stand now before many first-year HCSMT members who never experienced the rush of last year's rehearsal process or never have received the helpful guidance of Kellie Duncan or Ashley Birdsell.

Now, I'm helping directors Stacey Axler and Lew Dean succeed in adding their own touch to the gender-bender. I'm finally realizing Ashley's perspective.

"It's not about what it is, it's about what it can become..."

A few cabarets, with Dr. Verzosa hammering away at the keyboard, has become HCSMT.

I can't wait to see what the 2nd Annual Gender-Bender Cabaret is to become!

I wish our student ensemble, partnering student organizations, and our drag performers a wonderful rehearsal process! I can't wait to celebrate your accomplishments on the evening of October 9th!

Seussically Yours,
Travis Gilbert
